Lowood’s budding gymnasts had a special treat last month when Olympic silver medallist Ji Wallace visited the region as part of his 17-day Goodwill Tour across Queensland.

As the only Aussie to ever win an Olympic medal in gymnastics, Wallace kicked off the tour in his role as a coach within Gymnastics Queensland’s high-performance program.

On Tuesday, 25 March, he stopped by Lowood and Gatton Gymnastics at the Lockyer Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre.

“I’m thrilled to be visiting the Darling Downs and supporting local clubs in their great work—who knows, it could lead to another Australian gymnast standing on the Olympic podium,” Wallace said, observed by Jannette Moy, our Facility Manager at Gatton during his interview with the local media.

During his visit, Wallace watched training sessions and connected with young gymnasts and coaches, sharing advice on developing speed, agility and strength, crucial traits for elite competition.

“Tours like this are so important—there might be a future medal contender right here in our own backyard as we head towards Brisbane 2032,” he added.

Gymnastics Queensland CEO Chris Rushton said the tour’s aim was to make sure regional clubs have the support and resources they need to help young athletes thrive in the lead-up to the Brisbane Olympic Games.
